Twelve patients with endoscopic evidence of esophagitis and with complaints of heartburn were studied during symptomatic episodes, by simultaneous measurement of respiration and intraluminal pressures and pH. After 300 ml. of HCl were placed in the stomach to insure the presence of gastric acidity, a small pH electrode and four water-filled polyvinyl catheters, spaced 5 cm. apart, were passed through the nares into the stomach and a baseline recording was made. The sensing device was then withdrawn into the esophagus to a level such that the bulb of the glass electrode was 5 cm. above the effective diaphragmatic hiatus. The
