The possible role of serotonin in the trigger mechanism producing shock due to bacterial endotoxin has been investigated. Prior studies in our laboratory showed that profound alterations occurred in serotonin concentrations within 15 sec. after the injection of Escherichia coli endotoxin, coincident with significant hemodynamic changes and marked intravascular agglutination of platelets in the dog. Actual release of serotonin, however, was not conclusively demonstrated.
After lethal amounts of endotoxin were injected in rabbits, the in vivo liberation of serotonin clearly was demonstrated in carotid artery blood. A statistically significant elevation of plasma serotonin was demonstrated after endotoxin, with serum and
