Never in the history of mankind has an effort to control disease equalled the tremendous attack now being made upon the nature, cause, and cure of cancer. Hundreds of millions of dollars and the efforts of thousands of investigators are being devoted to the study of cancer and to methods of treatment. A major portion of this program is directed to the development of chemotherapeutic methods of control of neoplasia. Vast numbers of substances ranging from crude plant and animal tissue extracts to carefully designed synthetic chemical compounds are being tested for their effectiveness as cancerocidal or cancerostatic agents.
