This richly sociological, historical study of the evolution of American hospitals from the mid-nineteenth century to World War II demonstrates how many of the characteristics and perceived problems of present-day American hospitals have their origins in the historical past, and how hospitals are also microcosmic expressions of more general structural and cultural patterns in American society.
