On grounds of ancient heredity the fine arts and medicine should be closely allied, for Apollo, the god of archery, prophecy, music, poetry, culture, the institutor and guardian of civil and political order and the founder of cities, was the father of Aesculapius, the god of medicine.
Medical men usually are not much given to a serious cultivation of the Muses. In the case of the average practitioner of our noble art—"Life's endless toil and endeavor" with its concomitant hardships and privations, consume the major part of his sleeping and his waking hours.
