The proctosigmoidoscope brought into being the surgical specialty of proctology much the same as the stomach tube gave birth to gastroenterology and the electrocardiograph to cardiology. As a result, sigmoidoscopy became a surgical procedure, an instrument to be used mainly by proctologists and general surgeons. The method, in its earlier days was, and in many places still is, attended by preparation which rivals that of a major surgical procedure.
