The terms of the title assigned to me are too ambiguous to pass without definition. By the practitioner of medicine we usually intend to include only those physicians and their professional associates who earn their living chiefly, if not entirely, by using the sciences and arts of medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as it is expressed in individual patients. Such physicians are by implication distinguished from those who are concerned with the prevention of disease through the authority and resources of official and volunteer health agencies.
