In 1912,2 a report of more than two thousand goiters revealed that they divided themselves into two great groups: those which were thyroid shaped and those which were nodular. Both groups were then studied from the standpoint of their structural and functional units and these were correlated with the clinical pictures. Since then, 32,479 goiters have been examined grossly and microscopically.
