In connection with the studies on poliomyelitis and epidemic encephalitis of man, it has frequently appeared to be advantageous to investigate the various types of epidemic encephalomyelitis as they occur in the animal kingdom. Important relations between Borna disease of horses and human encephalitis have been established through the neuropathological studies of Seifried and Spatz,1 Nicolau and Galloway2 and others. A rare opportunity was afforded to establish the existence of a new virus disease in horses and mules which made its appearance in California during the summer and fall months of 1930 and 1931.
