Several cases of human infection with Bacterium tularense are on record in which there has seemed to be good reason to consider mosquitoes as possible vectors. Eight species of mosquitoes were used in a series of experimental investigations of the validity of this assumption. Mechanical transmission was shown to be possible, infection being transferred from infected to healthy guinea pigs by interrupted feeding of Aëdes aegypti in one instance; and twice by crushing single specimens on the unbroken skin of guinea pigs, 24 hours and 9 days, respectively, after the original infecting feeding by the mosquitoes.
