The streptococci, among the earliest of the pathogenic bacteria to be observed, have ever since been a center of interest and a source of much discussion. Notwithstanding many investigations, our knowledge of this group was, for a time, in a state bordering on the chaotic. Although much has been done to bring some semblance of order out of this confusion, much, however, remains to be accomplished before the situation is completely clarified. The monograph of Dr. Williams makes a distinct contribution towards this needed clarification.
