The term psychiatrist as used in the title and the following discussion is intended to indicate not only the physician's relation to psychiatry proper but also to psycho-neurology and the whole range of functional diseases and all of the disorders attributable to disturbances of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. All of these fields of study are so interrelated that at least from the internist's standpoint wide separation is undesirable and in the absence of a comprehensive designation I have chosen the term psychiatrist to indicate the physician's relation to all nervous and mental backgrounds of disease as well as the
