Recently Strauss and Castle1 postulated that Addisonian pernicious anemia is due to the lack of a specific (hematopoietic) reaction between an extrinsic, dietary factor (vitamin B2), and an intrinsic factor present in normal gastric juice. In Addisonian anemia the lack of the specific reaction is due to an absence of intrinsic factor, and the extrinsic factor alone will not produce a hematological response. We have tested this theory on four cases of Addisonian pernicious anemia and the results form the basis of this report.
