This volume, which was issued a very short time before the author's death, contains a very readable account of his interesting career. Dr. Martin was a man of strong personality who often bent men and events to conform with his will. It is still early to appraise his achievements as an Editor and in connection with the development of the American College of Surgeons and the rôle it has played in elevating the standards of surgery and of hospitals in this country. There is no doubt, however, that this book will always prove an interesting document in the study of
