Since Rothmann, in 1931, showed that the hemoglobin percentage and the red cell count in a series of patients suffering from widely different diseases bore a fairly constant relationship to the amount of adenylic nucleotide in the blood, there has been a progressively increasing interest in the physiologic rôle of adenylic acid. The Annual Review of Biochemistry lists 114 separate papers in one bibliography. In the light of recent investigation, this study has become all the more interesting because of the general enthusiasm which first greeted nucleic acid therapy twenty years ago, and its subsequent failure to materialize.
