Students of the pathologic physiology of the circulation have followed with interest the investigations of Dr. Harrison and his colleagues at Vanderbilt University. In this volume a point of view attained by this group as to the meaning and mechanism of congestive heart failure is ably presented. No attempt is made to minimize the uncertainty still prevailing as to the nature of certain phenomena, but from the existing data a strong argument is drawn that backward failure, or back pressure from the left and the right ventricles is the source of the congestive process.
