A fundamental purpose of the American College of Physicians is to raise the level of the practice of internal medicine. Important steps have been taken towards the attainment of this objective.
The development of the membership of the College to include a majority of the more outstanding clinicians, teachers and investigators of this country has in itself been important since it increases the prestige attached to membership in the College.
