There are some types of investigations which require many years of work before any considerable progress is made; studies of the digestive function of the external secretion of the pancreas are of such a nature. The difficulty in preparing suitable experimental conditions in animals, the care needed in controlling the many variable factors of each experiment, and the lengthy chemical analyses, require in some instances as long as a year to study a single case. J. H. Pratt has since 1907 almost continuously studied some aspect of this branch of physiology, and in recent years has actively directed the work
