Before enumerating methods for achieving the best regulation of the diabetic regimen it is important to marshall the available facts that throw light on this phase of the disease. Only in this way can we clarify our objective and estimate the degree of success attained.
Adequate regulation of a patient with diabetes mellitus has been thought for a long time to consist in balancing the diet and insulin in a way that maintains the urine free from sugar, avoids periods of hyperglycemia, and at the same time avoids insulin reactions.
