The specific stimulating action of carbon dioxide on the vasomotor centers and its pressor effect on blood pressure have been known for some time. As early as 1864, Thiry1 observed a rise of the blood pressure of animals during the inhalation of carbon dioxide and expressed the opinion that this was the result of stimulation of the vasomotor center, which produces a constriction of the peripheral arterioles. Traube2 later confirmed this work and also looked on carbon dioxide as an excitant of the vasomotor center.
