Multiple myeloma is considered a malignant tumor exhibiting multiple foci throughout the red bone marrow in the body. One of the first cases of this disease reported in 1845 by William McIntyre received very little attention from the medical profession. Not until 1882 was it definitely recognized after presentation by Kuhne and it was further described in 1889 by Kahler. The etiology of the disease is as yet unknown.
