BY definition gynecomastia1 is "Excessive size of the male mammary glands." By common usage gynecomastia is composed of true and false types.2 True gynecomastia consists of hyperplasia of the rudimentary mammary ducts and of the periductal connective tissue. False gynecomastia is a proliferation of fatty and subcutaneous tissues. This paper pertains only to true gynecomastia and purposely is not titled "Gynecomastia due to severe starvation" the reasons for which will appear later.
