It is a pleasure to welcome the newly elected Fellows and Associates on this occasion. I am confident that you will enjoy and profit by the privileges and associations which come to you as members of the American College of Physicians.
In keeping with tradition, the retiring President is expected to address the Convocation on some phase of medicine which may be of interest or importance to the welfare of the College. Several of my distinguished predecessors on these occasions have presented their ideas of the characteristics, abilities, qualities and responsibilities of the internist.
