During the past 10 years a considerable experience in the use of adjustable mixtures of protamine zinc and regular insulin in the Section on Metabolism Therapy of the Mayo Clinic has led to the formation of certain opinions about the usefulness and limitations of this method of insulin therapy of diabetes. Among other things, it has become apparent that appropriate mixtures, because of the intermediate character of their action with respect to onset, intensity and duration, have great usefulness in cases of moderately severe to severe diabetes.
