The President of The American College of Physicians requested me to speak at the annual meeting and then to report in this journal on the present status of the ballistocardiogram, and so this presentation will take the form of a critical essay rather than of the usual review article. I shall aim not only to summarize the more interesting features of a field which is rapidly growing in many directions, but also to view this field against the background of the changing medical interests and conceptions characteristic of our times.
