An unusual, puzzling and fatal type of heart disease in a 14 month old child was recently under observation on the pediatric service of the Robert B. Green Hospital. At the postmortem table, prior to examination, Dr. Louis J. Manhoff, pathologist to the hospital, after a brief perusal of the clinical data and on criteria to be elucidated later, expressed the opinion that the child had congenital endocardial fibroelastosis. This was confirmed by the pathologic examination. An informal survey among colleagues in medicine, pediatrics and pathology revealed that they, like the author, were not aware of the existence of knowledge
