This book on aging and disease, written by the Editor-in-Chief of the Zeitschrift für Altersforschung, represents the basic German text on gerontology. In workmanship and general appearance the second edition is quite an improvement over the first edition of 1947, which was written and published under conditions of dire distress. The pages have been increased from 413 to 600, and the illustrations from 170 to 285.
This progress reflects the continued intensive activity of the pioneer of German gerontologic research, who began his investigations on the physiologic chemistry of aging tissues in 1927 and who, together with the late Emil
