This book represents a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Heilmeyer in medical schools in Munich and in Japan and India.
The first chapter, entitled "Scientific Thought in Medicine as Exemplified by Investigation of the Blood," gives a brief history of the philosophy of the blood from Empedocles to the present time and discusses the factors affecting the sedimentation rate, the electrophoresis pattern of plasma proteins, alcohol fractionation of proteins and the serum properdin concentration and its influence upon the resistance of the animal to experimental infection.
