In this discussion I shall use the term restorative services rather than rehabilitation to identify services provided by the physician and other professional and technical personnel in allied medical fields to improve or at least to maintain the physical and functional capacity of a patient. The term restorative services seems more appropriate than rehabilitation, since the latter generally implies vocational goals, and obviously we are less likely to be concerned with them when dealing with older persons. My discussion will therefore be concerned with a dynamic medical program for restoring maximal possible function in an older patient. Primary emphasis will
