The initial recognition of carcinoma of the stomach is usually the function of the family physician or internist. Individuals who suffer from upper gastrointestinal symptoms compose a large group of those patients who seek medical attention. Many of these patients suffer from complaints which suggest the possibility of carcinoma of the stomach. The family physician or internist is usually in the position of being the first to consider this diagnostic possibility. It is likewise often his responsibility to decide when the diagnosis of cancer can safely be excluded from consideration as the explanation of digestive symptoms.
