This study began in 1956 with the appointment of the Committee by the Regents of The American College of Physicians. The work of the Committee under its original Director, Dr. M. A. Blankenhorn, is described in some detail in a guest editorial that appeared in this journal.1 As a result of this pioneering effort, the Committee reached three major conclusions: (1) that the quality of care in any hospital may be judged by
