Disorders of muscle have received much attention in the medical literature in recent years. The profusion of clinical, descriptive terms defining muscle syndromes has done little to assist in codifying muscle diseases or in clarifying their relationships to one another. The present book analyzes one class of muscle disease, "idiopathic" polymyositis, and represents an attempt to establish this as a separate entity on rational, scientific bases.
The authors have designated as polymyositis several types of muscle disorders because of similarities in histological appearances and electrical behavior. Subdivisions of the class have been based on clinical pictures in the main. The
