The fifth edition of this stand-by of cardiology was necessitated by the recent advances in heart disease, particularly in the field of cardiac surgery, both for acquired and congenital heart disease. Advances in electrocardiography and the arrival of vectorcardiography likewise require attention. As implied, the emphasis is placed on clinical aspects of heart disease. The author has unusual ability to get at the core and important aspects of disease. There is a mature view of accomplishments and aims.
