Chronic respiratory insufficiency is the end stage of many diverse processes which involve the lung and its airways. Professeur Laval and his colleagues of la Faculte de Medecine de Marseille have given broad treatment to this complex problem. In a monograph whose scope is much wider than might be inferred from its title, they deal with pathogenic factors, normal and altered pulmonary physiology, diagnostic procedures, clinical descriptions, and the results of various treatment programs. Endocrine factors and body morphology are given more emphasis than one usually encounters in American works on the subject. The section devoted to physiology, comprising about
