Here is an array of physicians, chemists, and physiologists who have studied diabetes mellitus and cared for its victims. The lineage runs from the Indian, Susruta ("'The urine looks like honey and acquires a sweet taste,'"), ca. 1,000 B.C., to our contemporaries. For each illustration a brief note describes the pertinence of this man or animal or place to the history of diabetes mellitus.
Most of the illustrations are of adequate quality but some (e.g., reproductions from Garrison's History of Medicine, and the picture of the first dog to have had pancreatectomy and
