Twenty-four articles contributed by investigators in the field of liver disease form the text of this first volume in what may come to be a periodic review of advances in knowledge of liver disease. The editors state that their purpose is to survey progress that has occurred since their text and others on diseases of the liver were published several years ago. In general, they have accomplished this effectively.
A number of deficiencies require comment. As would be expected, there is a variability in quality of the articles; one is little more than a bibliography in prose. There is considerable
