Clinical and experimental studies on shock due to infection with Gram-negative bacteria have been carried out by the author and several associates during the past ten years. During the decade 1950-1960 clinical studies were made on 150 patients, and during 1955 to 1960, 29 patients with shock and renal failure were evaluated. The mortality rate in the latter group was 70%. Detailed experimental studies in the dog and monkey have been concerned with the nature of the initial hemodynamic changes following injection of endotoxin, the influence of endotoxin on renal function, and an evaluation of pharmacologic agents in reversing endotoxin
