Clinical and laboratory data are presented which allow one to distinguish patterns of immunological deficiency in the leukemias and lymphomas. These diseases, in their evolution, morphologically and enzymatically derange one cell line more severely than others, although characteristic differences may be obliterated by treatment or in the end stages of the disease. In the lympho-proliferative diseases, impaired immunity is the result of quantitative or qualitative abnormalities in gamma globulin production. In the myeloproliferative diseases, this abnormality is usually not present, but there may be a deficiency of mature granulocytes capable of phagocytosis.
