The formation of concentrated urine is unique, not in the transport processes which are involved, but in the functional organization of these processes. The underlying mechanism appears to be the same sodium transport process which has been studied in many other tissues and organs. This process, together with the unusual anatomical distribution of mammalian nephron segments into cortex and medulla and the varying permeability of these segments to water, makes possible the formation of markedly hypotonic or hypertonic urine as the situation may require.
