The most usual caveat against symposia is that the presentations are of uneven quality, that the material is poorly edited, and that it would not reach publication on its own merit. This indictment I can apply less to the book being reviewed than to any comparable symposia which I have read in recent years. A few of the authors apparently were assigned general subjects and made rather general statements of little explanatory or provocative value. At least one author points out that the material which he is presenting has been reviewed recently at two other symposia. Probably a number of
