As President of the American College of Physicians, it is now my duty and privilege to welcome and address you, the members and guests of the College, here present at its forty-third annual session. I propose to discuss the College in terms of its aims, its performance, its opportunities and obligations, and its growth. I have been honored by the College by having been elected a vice-president in 1956, and have since had the privilege of serving as a regent, as President-Elect, and now as President, since that date.
