It is often said that the book reviewer should confine himself to judging how well an author has written the book he set out to write. This reviewer disagrees; the critic should imagine an ideal text which would best fill the wants of the readers the author presumably had in mind.
In the case of The Spine Dr. Epstein seems to have conceived of a text which would help the physician to identify the nature of spinal disease in his patients. If he would know what diseases produce lesions in the spine (vertebral column and its neural contents) and how
