This communication reports the occurrence of avascular necrosis of the femoral head in 2 patients with sickle cell trait (AS hemoglobin). Although this is known to occur in both sickle cell anemia (SS hemoglobin) (1) and in some of its genetic variants (2), we are unaware of any reports of avascular necrosis of the femoral head in association with pure sickle cell trait.
Standard hematologic techniques were utilized for complete blood counts (3). Sickle cell tests were performed using 2% sodium metabisulfite (3).
Fetal hemoglobin content was determined by the method of Singer, Chernoff, and Singer (4).
