The international symposium on shock which met in Stockholm, Sweden, was the third of its kind during the past four years. One, held in Semmering, Austria, in 1958, dealt with the biochemical response to injury, and another, held in Washington, D. C., in 1960, covered recent progress and present problems in the field of shock. Why this renaissance of interest? There may be many reasons, but one of the most important is the emergence of a new and controversial theme—endotoxin as the cause of irreversible shock.
