Two new methods brought fresh vigor to pathology of renal disease in the 1950's: renal biopsy (percutaneous) and electron microscopy. The Ciba Symposium which was held in London in March 1961 and is reported in this text explored a variety of recent contributions to nephrology, contributions which depended altogether or in large part on the unique usefulness of these new methods. Much of what was presented had already appeared piecemeal in print, but even this material has been gathered and summarized most effectively in these papers.
