In an admirably clear fashion, this short monograph outlines current concepts about what insulin is and does, the consequences of its lack in terms of alterations in the intermediary metabolism of glucose, fat, and protein, and, finally, the status of treatment with insulin preparations and various oral hypoglycemics. The reader is given a highly sophisticated, readable, and pertinent picture of the interlocking multi-enzyme systems of the major pathways of intermediary metabolism. Speculations regarding alterations in these pathways and the mechanism of insulin action are pertinent; in particular, the author's emphasis on substrate induction of enzymic activity is appealing to this
