Doctor Engstrom's book is based on lectures which he presented in 1961 while he was Visiting Professor of Medical Physics at the University of California. It provides an up-to-date guide to microanalytical techniques of great potential importance in the elucidation of the cellular structure of biological systems.
The text begins with a brief but lucid review of the physical principles of X-ray emission, absorption, and diffraction. There follows a chapter on the formation of magnified X-ray images which is devoted largely to microradiography, though projection and reflection microscopy are also considered. Subsequently, the use of X-ray microscopy in the quantitative
