A number of polypeptides affect the smooth muscle of the blood vessels (1). Two such polypeptides, bradykinin and angiotensin, are released from the alpha-2-globulin of the plasma by enzymatic action (2, 3). Although both of these substances are polypeptides and both are released from the same plasma protein fraction, their actions on the blood vessels are quite different. A recent report from this laboratory described the digital vascular responses to intra-arterial injection of bradykinin as dependent in large part upon closure of the arteriovenous anastomoses (4).
