MARK H. LEPPER, M.D.
In formulating his theories on the mechanism of chemotherapeutic effects, Ehrlich was greatly influenced by the evidence in his studies on dyes of the specificity of the immune reaction and the specificity of the tissue in the host. The dominant thought that evolved was that chemically defined substances could be found which would have a selective deleterious effect on the parasite. He originated the famous "magic bullet" metaphor for destruction of the parasite without injury to the tissue cell. Although the ideal result would have been complete destruction of the invader and complete lack of effect on the host, Ehrlich
