Perhaps one of the best-known features of the German scientific literature is the "Handbuch." From time to time an acknowledged expert in a given field will undertake the herculean labor of producing an exhaustive review of the ever-increasing literature on a certain subject as part of a systematic, authoritative summary of current knowledge of a whole field, for instance, anatomy or internal medicine. These large reference works must, of course, be continually revised.
